SA’s New Draft AI Policy – What It Means for Journalists Using AI 📑

Last week Thursday (2 April), Cabinet approved the Draft National AI Policy for public comment (60-day window now open). This is a pretty big deal for anyone in journalism who relies on AI tools every day.

The policy isn’t about restricting AI — it’s about guiding how we develop and use it responsibly in South Africa. For journalists, that directly shapes the way we generate ideas, draft story outlines, summarise sources, analyse data, translate content, or create social media posts. Here’s the simple version of the 6 Key Pillars and why they matter to us:

1️⃣ Build local AI skills:
We need more South African journalists who understand and can work confidently with AI.

2️⃣ Grow jobs & help local SMEs: AI should support media outlets (big and small) and create opportunities, rather than just replacing roles in newsrooms.

3️⃣ Use existing regulators (multi-regulator approach): Sector bodies will likely guide AI use in media and content — think accuracy, fairness and accountability standards we already follow.

4️⃣ Make AI ethical and locally relevant: Outputs should reflect South African realities instead of generic or foreign-trained assumptions.

5️⃣ Protect and digitise our indigenous languages & culture: AI can help us preserve and work in languages beyond English and Afrikaans, which is useful for reaching more audiences.

6️⃣ Keep humans in charge. AI supports, doesn’t replace: This is the big one for journalism: AI is a helpful assistant for research or drafting, but final decisions, fact-checking and editorial judgement must stay with human journalists.
Overall, the policy encourages us to treat AI as a helpful, transparent tool that serves public interest journalism — not a mysterious black box that does the thinking for us. It pushes for local context, accountability and human oversight in everything from story generation to verification.
